YMCA MILL HOLLOW PROGRAM OVERVIEW
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AT ITS BEST
With an emphasis on nature, adventure and exploration, our camp has never been more dedicated to making learning fun and memorable. At YMCA Mill Hollow, campers will get the best elements of traditional camp combined with a goal to teach kids about ecology, the environment, animals and so much more! Check out some of the highlights below!
During each session, EVERY camper will participate in activities centered around:
ANIMAL SCIENCE
Each week, camp ends with a game of "Predator-Prey" in which campers are assigned different roles of the food chain and have to "survive" the game by collecting enough food and water, while even avoiding famine and forest fires! This serves as a culmination of many of the environmental activities they have learned about each week.
ARCHERY
What's an overnight camp without archery?! During our archery modules, campers will learn the basic safety precautions of archery and hone skills throughout their time with us! We understand that each camper may be at a different skill level, so our trained Archery Instructors are ready to tailor lessons for each skill set!
ECOLOGY
We are situated in the Uinta-Wasatch National Forest so there is a lot of Ecology to learn about all around us! Campers have the awesome privilege of not only experiencing nature firsthand, but also learning all about it from amazing educators! While learning about ecology, campers will focus on animals, trees and plants and even try their hand at identifying a few of them!
FIRE SAFETY AND OUTDOOR LIVING
One of the best parts of experiencing the outdoors is interacting with the environment - such as using a campfire for warmth and cooking! Being located in the National Forest, it is important for youth to learn about safe ways to build and put out fires, while also learning other fun tips and tools to enjoy life in the outdoors!
GEOLOGY
By studying the Earth’s rocks we provide our campers with a better understanding of how the world is shaped and changed over time. We take a look at the process of water erosion as campers get to mine for gold in our creek and even take a crack at rocks they find to see what is inside!
HIKING
Hikes are a great opportunity for an immersive educational experience of Forest Ecology, Animal Science, Geology, and many of the other topics we'll be covering throughout the days at camp! Whether it is the first time for your camper, or they're a seasoned pro - Hiking at YMCA Mill Hollow is a blast! We will also learn about Hiker safety and basic survival skills.
ORIENTEERING
Orienteering is the process of using tools to navigate unfamiliar surroundings. We provide many of our campers with their first extended exposure to nature and with these orienteering activities, we are able to give our campers vital tools and knowledge to increase their capacity to navigate the world around them without relying on modern technologies.
TEAM BUILDING
We use team building games and activities as a way to introduce people and gain a sense of trust and mutual understanding between participants. Campers learn about each other and themselves in fun and exciting ways. This helps build and strengthen our camp family and keeps campers coming back year after year.
WATERFRONT
When campers come to YMCA Mill Hollow, we pride ourselves on their immersion into the natural world. This turns aquatic as our campers get to experience a day boating at the local reservoir kayaking and canoeing. During their time at the waterfront, campers are challenged build confidence by trying something new, or honing in on a skill they already have!
