Aliyah's Y Story

When Aliyah started participating in Weber County’s Summer Day Camp, there was some conflict with a few other girls in the program. Aliyah and one of the girls really enjoyed the STEM activities and they both chose to participate in the STEM activities during their free choice time. As they spent time together working on STEM projects, they got to know one another better and started getting along. Both girls decided they wanted to participate in the Y’s Thingamajig event and were assigned to the same Invention Group. In their group, the girls were able to bond over their love of STEM while learning the importance of being part of a team. And what was even “sweeter” was that Aliyah’s Invention Group went on to earn one of the awards at the Thingamajig event!

When asked about what she learned from participating in STEM that summer, Aliyah said, “Having a team is good! Our team learned how to work together well and I am excited about doing more STEM activities.”

A shared love of STEM helped connect these girls and teach them valuable lessons about communication, problem solving, teamwork and STEM!
